Aleph Military Shabbaton

It’s time again for the annual Aleph Institute’s Military Sabbath Retreat and Training Course. This year’s course will be held from 8 – 12 Feb 2012. The theme will be “Diversity in our Nation’s Armed Forces, Crisis or Opportunity?”

The event is geared to chaplains (Jewish and Non Jewish) and lay leaders, however, all Jewish military personnel are invited to attend and would benefit from participation.

At no time since President Harry Truman integrated our Armed Forces has our Military faced challenges to its cohesion and social fabric as it does today. This training course will focus on the findings of the Military Leadership Diversity Commission (MLDC), the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT), the expanding role of women in the Armed Forces and the implications of these and similar topics, with particular emphasis on the role of the Military Chaplain. The Bible and the Talmud as the sources of Jewish values and the determinants of Jewish behavior will be mined for guidance in approaching the above.

Training Courses Available:

  1. The intra-psychic aspects of adapting to a multicultural and diverse social environment
  2. Lessons on diversity from The Bible and Talmud
  3. Lessons Learned – Sharing thoughts and experiences, a panel discussion
  4. The experiences of other militaries to include The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and allied militaries
  5. Career management guidance with particular emphasis on the unique challenges of ministry in a highly diverse milieu
  6. The Army’s accommodation to bearded rabbis – where do we go from here?
