What is “Jews in Green”?
It is a website devoted to Jewish servicemembers: past, present, and future.
Jews in Green (JIG) is an idea I have had for a few years now. After enlisting in the Marine Corps at 18, serving for 9+ years, and then making the transition to the officer ranks, I’ve come to realize that being a Jew in the service presents some unique challenges. My hope is that by creating this website, other Jews serving in our armed forces can learn what resources are available for them, share their experiences with one another, and offer support when needed.
What makes this website different?
There are a few other websites about Jews in the military (most notably the jewishmarines.com series of websites) but most concentrate on the history of Jewish servicemembers. I plan on including a fair share of Jewish history on the site, but I hope that the main focus is on issues and topics that affect us on a daily basis.
Why are you doing this?
Simply because I wish there was something like this when I first enlisted. I’m certainly not going to get rich off this venture (although I may offer ad spots, etc. to help pay for hosting and other overhead costs).
Why green? My uniform is blue (white, red, etc.)!
OK, in picking a military theme I had to choose something that was easily recognizable and somewhat common to all of us. Despite our rainbow of uniforms, I felt green accomplished this the best.
