Help Me Help Jewish Troops
Posted by Nancy Hanrahan on May 18, 2006

My father was in the Navy, my husband is a Sergeant for the NYPD and my 12 year old son, Scott (right), wants to be in the Armed Forces. Scott told my family, “My grandfather and my dad and all the people in the Armed Forces are heroes in my eyes. They go unappreciated for what they do and I want to do something special for all of them”. This is why Scott decided to do “TANAKHS FOR TROOPS” as his Bar Mitzvah Project.

There has not been a Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) printed for the United States Troops since 1955. Now, The Jewish Publication Society is looking to print one. The Tanakhs will be sold at a discount rate of $10.50 for each one. Scott explains, “When I enter the Military I would like to have a Tanakh to carry around with me wherever I may be sent. I think men and women that are now in the Armed Forces probably feel the same way I do and I would like to help them get their own”.

Right now there are approximately 14,000 – 16,000 Jewish Troops in our Armed Forces. Scott says, “My goal is to be able to provide a Tanakh for each and every Jewish man or woman who is serving in the Armed Forces. I realize that $147,000 - $168,000 is a lot of money but I have high hopes that people will come through and help me attain my goal”. Scott is donating a portion of the gifts he receives from his Bar Mitzvah toward this goal. He is asking his family and friends to donate what they can to help him. Scott even sent a flyer to Adam Sandler because, “Adam Sandler is so openly Jewish and proud of it that I hope he will help me support our Jewish Troops”. We’re just hoping that Adam Sandler will read Scott’s flyer and respond. Scott emailed his flyer to Shomrim Societies (Jewish Police and Fire organizations) and Jewish War Veterans Associations. Scott mailed flyers to President Bush, Vice President Cheney and many others in hopes of giving this Project the attention and support it deserves.

If you would like more information or would like to make a donation, please email Scott’s proud mom, Nancy, or Scott both at and we will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Remember, doing a Mitzvah (a good deed) is a wonderful thing to do!!

Thank you, Scott, for your wonderful efforts. As the mom of a Jewish Marine, your project is very meaningful to me! My son brought his siddur to boot camp, and he prayed every night. He bought a bible at the Parris Island PX. I’m sure being issued an Armed Forces Tanakh would mean a lot to him.

Sincerely,
Lynn Brooks, PMM of Pfc. Ethan

Scott…
Your grandparents and parents must be very proud of you. This is a wonderful undertaking. I still have my bible which was issued in service(by the Jewish Welfare Board) over 50 years ago.
My best wishes.

I’m sure there are other veterans, like me who would like our own copy too.  I’d be happy to buy one for myself and a few for others.

You are an amazing young man. Thank you for supporting our men/women in uniform. I hope and pray that others will follow in your footsteps. Much success with your good deed.
