Review: Cast a Giant Shadow
Posted by Capt Rubin on July 20, 2005

If you’ve never heard of Mickey Marcus, you are missing out on an amazing tale of a Jewish soldier.  His incredible journey, from fighting in Europe during WWII to serving as Israel’s first general in nearly 2000 years, is portrayed in the 1966 classic, Cast a Giant Shadow.  It’s a portrait of an American patriot who becomes the reluctant hero of Israel and the Jewish people.

There are some typical Hollywood (especially 1960’s Hollywood) historical alterations, but overall the film is generally historically accurate.  The top-notch cast is led by Kirk Douglas (Colonel Marcus) and includes John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Angie Dickenson, and Yul Brynner!  Seeing John Wayne raise his glass and say, “L’chaim” is reason enough to catch this flick!

Read on for my full review and some more details on the life of Colonel Marcus.

Review: Hope and Honor

When I first heard about General Sidney Shachnow’s amazing journey from the depths of an eastern European ghetto to the top ranks of the US Army, I was quite intrigued. After researching his story, I found out that the general was in the process of writing an autobiography. I immediately put my pre-order in at Amazon.com.

Well, finally got a chance to sit down and read Hope and Honor. It is well-written and I don’t think I have read many books as inspiring as this one. I highly recommend it.  Read on for my full review.

Jewish Military Book List
Posted by Capt Rubin on June 06, 2004

While browsing Amazon.com the other day, I happened to come across this readers list of books of interest to Jews in the military.

The list is simply titled, Jews in the Military and was complied by jmpersons, “A Jew in the Military.” I haven’t read many of the books myself, but it does seem like a pretty comprehensive list.

Book Review: The Brigade
Posted by Capt Rubin on May 18, 2004

brigade.jpgWhile not about Jews in the U.S. military, Howard Blum’s The Brigade tells the story of the first all Jewish military unit in modern times.  The Jewish Brigade was formed by the British army with Jewish volunteers from British Palestine at the end of World War II.

This is by far one of my favorite books.  It is highly motivating to read about Jewish soldiers wreaking havoc on Nazi troops in Europe.  There’s a lot more to this book than a few military battles though.  You can read my full review to learn more.
