Hi all,
I’m hoping to PCS to Okinawa this summer, and I was wondering if there are indeed other Jews on that island. If there are, or if you know of any, I’d sure love to start making contacts.
There is a Jewish community there, complete with a rabbi(which can be oh so rare overseas). I don’t have his contact info anymore, but you should be able to get it from the base chapel there. I have heard Okinawa is pretty nice, I am in Misawa Japan, so it is quite different up here! Best of luck!
I’ll probably be there myself this summer. There is a chaplain there, as well as regular Shabbat services. For contact info, see our listing for Okinawa.
I was there back in 95, but wasn’t involved at all in the Jewish community. I have heard good things in recent years about the Jewish community there now.
Okinawa is a good time. It’s really what you make of it.
Thanks so much for your replies. It’s good to know we won’t be the only ones lighting Shabbos candles. I wonder how one works sushi into the Passover seder… :-)
If either of you do make your way to Okinawa, you’re more than welcome to join us for Shabbos sometime.
