Hi all,
I’m hoping to PCS to Okinawa this summer, and I was wondering if there are indeed other Jews on that island. If there are, or if you know of any, I’d sure love to start making contacts.

Thanks!

There is a Jewish community there, complete with a rabbi(which can be oh so rare overseas). I don’t have his contact info anymore, but you should be able to get it from the base chapel there. I have heard Okinawa is pretty nice, I am in Misawa Japan, so it is quite different up here! Best of luck!

Carrie,

I’ll probably be there myself this summer.  There is a chaplain there, as well as regular Shabbat services.  For contact info, see our listing for Okinawa.

I was there back in 95, but wasn’t involved at all in the Jewish community.  I have heard good things in recent years about the Jewish community there now.

Okinawa is a good time.  It’s really what you make of it.

Thanks so much for your replies. It’s good to know we won’t be the only ones lighting Shabbos candles. I wonder how one works sushi into the Passover seder… :-)

If either of you do make your way to Okinawa, you’re more than welcome to join us for Shabbos sometime.

Best regards,
Carrie

As far as Seder kits go, Camp ZAMA’s Chaplain ordered 6 sets, so there must be some Jews in Japan!

If your chaplain didn’t order Seder Kits yet, make sure that he does so right away.  Discuss it with your chaplain and supply commander.

Seder kits are available via the DLA at:

Everything in the Seder Kit is 100% Kosher, under strict Orthodox Rabbinical supervision.
