LINK to JIG story.

Should there ever be an issue with asking off for the High Holidays?  Why do some supervisors ask your level of observance in determining if you should be excused from duty?

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are two holidays that even “Non religious/observant” Jews attend services and fast. How do we explain this? Are these people being “all of the sudden observant”? Or is this the same as Christians taking off for Christmas and Easter?

Have you ever run into a situation like this?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Greetings LT:

GM1(SW/SCW) Peter M. Michelson (Pincus Mendel). The answer is very much Yes. I have been in the Great service of or Navy for 16.5 yrs and have run into this inconvence. first before letting others know I am an observent Jew i feel out the climate. I have learned all of my wrights. I have been the only one at most of my Commands. So I have had to do a lot of teaching, deal with closed minded backwards people. Its really their lose. First I make my mark by always doing the very best job I can. I work hard for my command and then once they the Non Jews see I am a team play I let them know. Most respect me for they know I will always do wright by the Command.
You really have to have a tough skin. Be determined in what you want and feel. I was raised Sephardic and hold the principles of the teaching my Parents and Family taught and passed along. I truely have to thank the great Rabbis I have met along the way. CDRs: Shadnow,Elson and of course Pantiz GREAT leaders and true teachers of the faith. I Dovan at home and on duty when I cannot make it to shul, eat kosher and live Jewish. I waited to find the very special and wright lady to Marry this past March after returning from a long deployment to the AFG and Sand Box in support of NSW in Coronado CA at the LOGSU1. CDR Elson did the Honors and it was great. I feel there is know real reason at all to hide that you are proud to be and want to live Jewish and serve your Country. LT you can reach me at my home email at , work email .
I would really enjoy reading your reply. Stay safe,as we Gunnersmates say “Keep Your Powder Dry” and have a grerat Shabbot.
