I couldn’t find this story covered in Jews in Green, but there has been an amazing exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park, Manhattan. The exhibit is called ‘Ours to Fight For,” and there is a book of the same name, available at the museum, or through Amazon.com (and maybe elsewhere, too). The exhibit closes Dec. 31, but my son (an enlisted Marine) and I spent a memorable afternoon there last week, exploring this rich exhibit. It has film footage from the era, recent footage of interviews with WW II vets, uniforms, weapons, gear, medals, posters, buttons, books, letters, photos, maps, and anything else you might imagine in an exhibit of this sort. Among the most memorable parts of the exhibit is footage of the first Jewish service held at Dachau after its liberation. There is plenty of war footage with lots of action in it, too, which my son liked.
If you can hurry up to the NYC for this exhibit before it closes, get there. It will give you lots of insight into the war, the Jewish experience fighting that war, and the repercussions decades later. It’s also interesting as a comparison with the current attitude of Jews toward the war in which we are engaged today. Anyway, I hope it’s not too late for some of you to see this, or at least to get the book. We gave it to my father-in-law (a WW II vet) as a gift.
